NPP presidential primary proceed smoothly as Joe Wise urges unity

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, has urged all presidential aspirants and their supporters to unite behind the eventual winner of the party’s ongoing presidential primary.

Speaking to the media at a polling centre on Saturday, January 31, Mr. Osei Owusu emphasised that party unity should take precedence after the elections.

“My advice to all the aspirants is that whoever wins, it is the party that has won. So all of us will give the support that we have to whoever wins,” he said.

He also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the voting process, describing it as transparent, well-secured, and peaceful.

“What I’m seeing is a free and fair process. What I’m seeing is a very well-secured voting centre. What I’ve seen is a rather very calm atmosphere. I’m confident that by the time the process is over, nobody will have any justification to complain,” Mr. Osei Owusu added.

More than 211,000 delegates are expected to vote at over 300 polling centres nationwide. The contest features five aspirants: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Security has been tightened across the country, with police deployed to polling centres to ensure a credible and peaceful exercise.

The primaries are being closely watched as they will determine the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election and influence the party’s direction following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
