The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has confirmed that salaries of more than 2,000 public sector workers, which were temporarily suspended, will be restored following verification of their employment status and the completion of the required clearance with the Ghana Audit Service.
The Department explained that the temporary salary suspension was carried out on the recommendation of the Auditor-General and in strict compliance with Public Financial Management (PFM) regulations.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, 2 February 2026, the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to transparent payroll management and the timely payment of salaries in line with PFM regulations.
“The Auditor-General conducted a headcount exercise last year and, just last month, wrote to us indicating that about 6,000 officers had not participated in the exercise and therefore should not be paid,” he said.
He clarified that further internal checks reduced the number of affected workers significantly.
“However, after our internal analysis, we realised that only about 2,000 officers were affected, as issues relating to the others had already been resolved,” Mr Agyei added.
Mr Agyei noted that salary payments were suspended to allow for proper verification.
“As a result, we suspended salary payments for those affected and have written to their respective institutions to inform the staff to avail themselves to the Ghana Audit Service for verification. Once the Auditor-General completes the process and formally notifies us, we will reactivate their payments,” he stated.
